ISV 8000 Power Over Ethernet
Objective
This document presents details on the Power over Ethernet support for the F5 Volterra Industrial Server (ISV) 8000.
ISV hardware supports both POE (802.3af) and POE+ (802.3at).

ISV 8000 Series POE Power Management
The total power budget for POE on the IGW is 126.2W with a guard band of 3W. Power consumption of each port is measured and calculated dynamically in real-time. Each port receives power on a first come, first-served basis.
The following scenarios explain the power management operation:

8 POE devices connected to the POE ports on the ISV and they all draw 15Ws each.
- Total calculated power draw = 8x15= 120W
- Power Available = 123.2W
- All eight devices will be provided power as needed

4 POE+ devices connected to the POE ports on the ISV and they draw 25Ws from the ISV. A fifth device is now connected drawing 25Ws.
- Total calculated power draw after the fifth device is connected = 4x25+25=125W
- Power Available = 123.2W
- Fifth device will not be powered up.
- First four devices continue to be provided power as needed

8 POE+ devices connected to the POE ports on the IGW and they all draw 15Ws in steady state from the ISV. Now device on port 7 is disconnected and replaced with a device that requires 25W from the ISV.
- Total calculated power draw = 7x15+25=130W
- Power Available = 123.2W
- Device on port 7 will be powered down
- Device on port 0 will be provided the increased power of 25W
- Devices on port 1-6 will continue to be provided power as required.

Following-on to scenario 3, if device on port 7 is again replaced with a device requiring only 15W, then the calculated power draw from the IGW will be 120Ws which is less than Power Available (123.2W) and therefore device on port 7 will be supplied power as required.
